Gelt Program

The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com.

Seniors in Israel

Seniors

The senior class returned to CJHS last week, having spent the last three weeks in Israel. During tefillot on Wednesday, students shared their insights about their time in Israel with their peers. Many reflected upon how their experience has led them to a deeper understanding of the modern State of Israel as it struggles to overcome the obstacles that, like any contemporary society, it must face.
This year's Senior Israel Experience focused upon issues related to security and coexistence, religious pluralism, social action and technological innovation. During their time in Israel, students met with representatives of a variety of political, ethnic and religious groups. They prepared Shabbat dinner for those who had none and assembled packages for soldiers. They walked through the alleyways of the Old City of Jerusalem and hiked the wadis of the Aravah desert. They dined in a Druze village and bathed in the hot springs of Hamat Gader. The group returned home with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for Israel and a stronger bond of friendship.

In the weeks to come, the seniors will be sharing reflections and pictures from their time in Israel. An initial photo exhibit (A Day in Tel Aviv) is on display in the Shapiro Dining Hall.

Senior Internships
Tech at NUWe also welcome back several seniors from their three-week internships, in professional or social action settings. Two of our students were privileged to work at Northwestern University, Max Abecassis managing a neuroscience study in brain waves and concentration and Daniel Eisenberg creating and testing composites in a material science lab. Daniel describes, "My specimen tests included ultrasonic scans searching for defects beneath the surface, dropping heavy weights from specific heights onto the specimens and scanning for damage, and running hours-long vibration tests to determine the various strain-rates of the specimens. This internship gave me a taste of what it means to conduct research in a laboratory, and introduced me to a new branch of science: material science."
CJDS Welcomes CJHS

CJDSEight of our CJHS students visited Chicago Jewish Day School in Chicago on Friday, January 22. Our student ambassadors participated in Kabbalat Shabbat services and joined the students for lunch, together with Tony Frank and Rachel Spiro. This is the second year that CJHS students have visited CJDS to build a relationship with Chicago Jewish families. Thank you to Rachel Aaronson, Benji Fleischacker, Maor Gordon-Guterman, Ceren Maier, Adin Warner-Rosen, Natalie Salzman, Nadav Sprague, and Elan Sykes for being wonderful student ambassadors at CJDS.

Bridge Builders

IIT BridgeSeven little millimeters of width took the CJHS bridge building team from the heights of victory to the end of the bronze medal list in Illinois Institute of Technology's regional Bridge Building Contest. Having painstakingly crafted an elegant and sturdy bridge, our engineering team of Max Abecassis, Lizzie Spicehandler, and Davy Silver discovered that the hind end was seven millimeters wider than the contest specifications. Undeterred, the three architects got out their glue guns and constructed a slimmer and even more intricate structure than before; the contest judges, having first admired the team's "unique design," then informed them that the CJHS bridge was now 2 grams over the weight limit!
IIT testingWith thirty seconds to go in the qualifying round, our engineers performed some emergency bridge surgery and soon submitted a gutted but still graceful bridge for a bronze medal in design. "I would have left it overweight and tested it 'unofficially' to see how well it would have done!" one disappointed judge whispered to our team as they marched proudly onto the stage with their pared-down model.
Alas for the Tiger engineers, one of the key load support beams had been slightly damaged in their attempts to remove some non-essential struts, and the bridge collapsed after supporting only 60 times its own weight, effectively removing it from the short list of winners. The bridge came in 43rd in its category.
Many thanks to Mr. Jeremy Adelman of IIT's business office for sponsoring CJHS's participation in this year's contest. Jeremy is thrilled to support "Jews doing science" in our community and is proud of our team for getting as far as they did.

The movie also has well-known Jewish ball players such as Ken Holtzman, Art Shamsky and Kevin Youklis in it.

Tickets are just $5 and can be purchased from Claire Peaceman, Zach Spellman, Iszy Licht or Dr. Auslander. Delicious ice cream and other snacks will be sold--purchase your tickets early and win free ice cream!

Alumni Trivia
AaronOur first regional champions were the plucky Alexandra Sakols (CJHS '07) and the indomitable Aaron Gore ('07). Aaron's bridge took 16th place in the region, supporting 1,082 times its own slender weight. Both earned bronze medals and placed in the top 50! It comes as no surprise to his friends that Aaron is now an engineering major at the University of Illinois, where he is set to graduate next year. Alexandra has just transfered to Northeastern Illinois University, having finished her associate's degree, and she sends word that college is a lot more manageable after taking ten classes at CJHS!
