Gelt Program
The P.O. is pleased to introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families. Faculty and staff who buy Gelt will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Kim Frankel 847.373.1183 kfrankel0721@gmail.com or Sarah Budweg 847.710.1740 sbudweg13@aol.com. Need stationery? Holiday cards? Family tributes? Order cards from the P.O.! Click here for more information. |
Community News and Events
Limmud is a Jewish communiversity, a feastival of learning. It is a pan-denominational, multi-generational and truly transformational experience. From early in the morning until late at night, there are several concurrent sessions about everything from Archeology to the Zohar. There are lectures, discussions, performances, hands-on crafts, film screenings, singing, dancing, workshops and meditation.
On February 14, 2010, Limmud will take place at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines. We continue to seek volunteers to help with logistics, marketing, fundraising, and presenting.
To learn more about Limmud Chicago, click here. At the Limmud Chicago site you can learn more about what will be happening on February 14, sign up to participate (and volunteer) for the day, and even sign up to be a presenter. |

Hello From Israel
"CJHS's Senior Israel Experience is off to a great start. We arrived in Israel safely on Monday afternoon after a smooth flight and were greeted at the airport by our Israeli staff before heading up to Jerusalem. We began our exploration of Israel in the Old City, visiting the holy sites of the three religions that reside within. Our day focused upon the overlapping claims of three religions to Jerusalem and the resulting tensions between and within each. On Day Two, we broadened our focus to the city of Jerusalem as a whole. We discussed the tension between the rights of all who live in the land and Israel's need for security.
"Our first days in Israel included meetings with representatives from the Masorti movement, the Jerusalem office of the American Jewish Committee, the Jewish Colony in Ir David (the site of Jerusalem in King David's time) and Shalom Akkshav (Peace Now). Their perspectives added to our understanding of the complex nature of the Jewish State and the core dilemmas that it faces today. More to come later."

Ten-Pin Tigers

CJHS staff and parents play the Ten-Pin Tigers bowling team on Thursday, January 28. Each year, members of the CJHS staff and parents are invited to join members of the bowling team for a round of bowling at Brunzwick Zone in Deerfield. Bowling team members enjoy showing their improved skills and knowledge of the game and have fun at the same time. This is the concluding bowling event for the team and will be followed by a bowling banquet at Mizrahi Grill on Tuesday, February 2. Our seventeen-member team has enjoyed another successful year marked by good times and seeing their bowling skills improve.

Alumni in the News
This week's Chicago Tribune spotlighted rising star Zach Berkman (CJHS '04), who was featured in the ABC Family hit show Make It or Break It last Monday. Zach's latest cover single, "All That I Know," can be seen in the end credits of last week's episode. Zach is a graduate of NYU and was also featured on P. Diddy's Starmaker earlier this year. Visit Zach's blog here to listen to full-length songs, or head over to iTunes here to purchase his album!
Seeing some familiar faces in the hall recently? CJHS welcomes Ms. Deanna Levin (CJHS '05), who has finished her student teaching in mathematics in Greenbelt, MD, and is now providing on-site learning for those CJHS students who take math online. We welcome Deanna back for what will undoubtedly be the start of an illustrious teaching career!
In addition to the other members of the Class of '09 who organized an impromptu reunion last week, we welcome back Ms. Elli Cohn and Mr. Aaron Weinberg, on break from Muhlenberg College and Israel respectively, who have been subbing for Rabbi Barkan in his absence. Way to go, graduates! |

Alumni Trivia
It's Avra Shapiro and Ron Schrag, CJHS '09! Ron is now indulging his passion for architecture at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Avra, on the other hand, has been spending the semester in Cusco, Peru, volunteering at an orphanage and teaching English at a kindergarten. Staying with a wonderful Peruvian host family, "Avrita" is working with several other international volunteers, with whom she's celebrated Chanukah, Sinter Klass, and the Feast of St. Lucia. She loves the beauty and culture of the country, now that she's gotten over her altitude sickness! "The orphanage has become like a second home to me.... I am constantly amazed by the sense of family that these 40 girls have created for each other.... These girls don't have much, but they truly appreciate what they do have, and their capacity for selflessness is unbelievable." Click here to follow Avra's travelogue! |

Baruch Dayan Emet
We regret to announce the passing of Joel Jacobs, father of Garrett Jacobs (CJHS '05), over winter break. May God comfort Garrett and Eileen Jacobs, along with all their family and friends, together with the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
Hamakon y'hanchem etchem b'toch sha'ar avlei tzion v'Yerushalayim.
CJHS also mourns the loss of Mrs. Laura Rushakoff, beloved former English teacher to many of our students. Mrs. Rushakoff taught for many years at the Skokie Solomon Schechter and later at the Schechter Middle school; she inspired many generations of students with her love of reading. Contributions in her memory can be made to the foundation for the Indian Trails Public Library. |
