Chesed Garden Blooms
GardenLast spring, the CJHS Garden Club, in collaboration with the Chesed Committee, dug and set up three gardens just outside the Shapiro Dining Hall at CJHS: one in dedication of Bev Fox and the other two as vegetable gardens. Hard work in the spring turned into a successful delight in the summer as the Memorial Garden grew and bloomed into a beautiful site. The vegetable gardens have grown and are now producing tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. For the next few weeks, students will be able to eat fresh school-grown vegetables every day during lunch.

Student Activities Fair

Activities

Activities"Join the United States Politics Club!"

"Be a part of the Chesed committee!"

"Sign up to get a pen pal from Uganda!"

These and other calls to action were exclaimed throughout CJHS on Wednesday at the 5770 Student Activities Fair. Twenty-three returning student organizations (and a handful of new ones in formation) displayed posters showcasing their accomplishments of years past and plans for the future. Students signed up to participate in a variety of activities that ran the gamut from searching for quarks to discussing literature with clients of the Ark. The Tiger Times newspaper, the Environmental Club, the Waukegan school partnership, the math team (AMC) and the physics squad (QuarkNet) were among the groups advertising their opportunities,Activities along with the ever-strong Va'ad HaStudentim, the Va'ad Tefillah, and the many tikkun olam projects. We're looking forward to a year filled with activity!

Goodman Athletic Field and Athletic Wing Dedication

Scoreboard

CJHS is proud to announce the dedication of the Larry Goodman Family Foundation Athletic Field and Athletic Wing. This special event will take place at CJHS on Sunday, September 13 at 3:30 p.m. and is open to the community. The athletic field and athletic wing are a gift from Larry and Lillian Goodman, through the Larry Goodman Family Foundation.

The dedication will take place in the school gym (and outside, weather permitting) and will highlight our own athletes and our commitment to sports as a component of our entire educational program; there will also be performances from the CJHS jazz band and choir, as well as a special appearance by Orli Gil, Israel's Consul General to the Midwest.

Juggling

Student athletes, check your mailboxes. All CJHS Tigers will be rallying for the event in full "away match" gear! Teams will assemble out on the field for yearbook photos from 2:00-3:30, then line up for the pep rally/ processional. The exact schedule for the soccer, golf, volleyball, tennis, and cross-country lineup has been sent out under separate cover.

This Week in Sports
XC
With dry, beautiful weather as a backdrop, this was a wonderful week for CJHS sports teams. Our 30-member cross-country team, by far the largest of our teams, had its season opener on Tuesday at the picturesque Lake Forest Academy 5k course. Even with the tough varsity competition, the men's team finished second and the women's team finished fourth. Congratulations to junior Aaron Cohn who finished second out of 67 runners and set a CJHS record for the course. The team competes on Tuesday, September 8 at Niles West in the Ron Campbell 2-Mile Invite.
XC

The small but competitive women's tennis team swept Maine East on Tuesday, with each player winning at least one match. The team also won several matches against a talented Highland Park team on Thursday. The team plays at North Shore Country Day on Tuesday, September 8.

soccer
In its inaugural season, the men's soccer team is off to a great start. Behind a strong defense, the team held its own on the road against the more experienced Niles West, Elgin Academy, and Cristo Rey. In its season home opener Thursday on the beautiful new Goodman Field, the team lost in a squeaker to Chicago Hope. The team benefits by having the week of September 7 off when injured co-captains senior Mark Weiss and junior Eitan Delrahim will return to the team.

VOLLEYBALL FRESHMENOur other new team, women's volleyball, has also come a long way in a very short time. This group has really practiced hard--and it shows. The team nearly pulled off a huge win at Cristo Rey on Tuesday in its first match of the season, and lost a disappointing contest at Waldorf on Thursday. Expect this team to come back strong in its home opener against St. Martin de Porre on Tuesday, September 8 and again at home on Thursday, September 10 against Northtown Academy.

The men's golf team has also enjoyed the sunny weather in the first few weeks of the season. The team defeated Northridge Prep in its home opener and played a great match against Loyola Academy on Tuesday. Following an inter-squad scrimmage on Tuesday, September 8, the team plays against Lake Forest Academy the following week. If all goes according to plan, the team will play in the state IHSA tournament at the end of the season.

Lulav & Etrog
Again this year, CJHS families will be able to order lulavim and etrogim through CJHS. Each set costs $50. Order forms are available in the office; orders must be placed by September 14. Lulavim will be distributed in school before Sukkot.
David Halivni Weiss Speaks

On Wednesday, September 2, Dr. David Weiss Halivni spoke to the Seniors' Modern Jewish Thought classes about the impact of the Holocaust on his theology. The seniors have been exploring philosophical and theological concerns that emerge from the Holocaust and have been discussing Simon Weisenthal's The Sunflower, which explores this theme. Dr. Halivni's perspective and insight deepened the conversation. We thank Dr. Halivni for taking the time to engage our students in dialogue.
Warning: Tigers Crossing
If you see CJHS students charging down the hall at high speed, they're not late to class--they're already in class! Ms. Lena Averbuch's freshman Algebra class spent this week studying rates and units of measurement, for which they measured the fastest speed at which they could run and practiced converting it from one unit of measurement to another.
RunnersNot to be outdone, Mrs. Shira Eliaser's honors physics classes (juniors and seniors) also stampeded through the school trying to calculate each other's horsepower by seeing how quickly they could climb up the stairs. The average CJHS student can usually only produce about 0.5 horsepower, but a few good runners have managed over 2 horses!
